Frequently asked questions

Is Bare Sudoku free?

Yes. Bare Sudoku is completely free in the browser and on Android. There are no ads, no in-app purchases and no premium version.

Does Bare Sudoku have ads?

No. Neither the web game nor the Android app shows ads, and there are no trackers or third-party scripts.

Do I need an account to play?

No. Open baresudoku.com and play. Your game is saved in the browser automatically, so you can close the tab and continue later.

Does Bare Sudoku work offline?

Yes. After the first visit the page is stored by the browser and opens without a connection. The Android app never uses the internet.

Are the puzzles always solvable without guessing?

Yes. Every puzzle has exactly one solution, and the generator checks that it can be solved with logical techniques only, up to the difficulty of the chosen level.

What do the hints explain?

A hint points to the next cell you can fill and names the technique it needed, for example a single candidate, the only place for a digit in a row, column or box, locked candidates, a pair or triple, X-Wing, Y-Wing, Skyscraper or Unique Rectangle, and at Master level chains, almost locked sets or forcing nets. Tap the hint again to place the digit.

Does Bare Sudoku collect any data?

Bare Sudoku keeps only anonymous counters: how many times the page was opened and how many games were started and finished, by level, language, device type and referring site. No IP address, no cookies, no account, and the totals are public at baresudoku.com/stats/. The saved game lives only in your browser's local storage.

Is there an Android app?

Yes. Bare Sudoku for Android is a 54 KB APK for Android 8 and newer, with no permissions and no internet access. Download it from GitHub Releases.

Why is the Android app not on Google Play?

The app is distributed as a signed APK from GitHub to stay tiny and free of store requirements. Updates are signed with the same key, so a new version installs over the old one.

Which languages does Bare Sudoku support?

59 languages, each on its own page: English, Türkçe, Deutsch, Français, Español, 日本語, 한국어, 中文, العربية, हिन्दी and more. The game follows the page language and remembers your choice.

Can I play with the keyboard?

Yes. Use the arrow keys to move, 1 to 9 to enter a digit, Backspace to erase, N for notes, U for undo, H for a hint, F to fill notes and Escape for the menu.

Where is the source code?

The web game and the Android app are open source under the MIT license on GitHub: alparslandev/baresudoku-web and alparslandev/baresudoku.

How do you play Sudoku?

Fill the 9×9 grid so that every row, every column and every 3×3 box contains the digits 1 to 9 exactly once. Some digits are given at the start; you deduce the rest. In Bare Sudoku, tap a cell and then a digit, or tap a digit first and then every cell where it belongs.

What is the difference between the Easy, Medium, Hard, Expert and Master levels?

The level is set by the techniques the puzzle needs. Easy and Medium are solved with singles only, and Easy starts with at least 38 given digits. Hard needs locked candidates or pairs and triples. Expert needs at least one advanced pattern, such as X-Wing, Y-Wing, Skyscraper or Unique Rectangle. Master needs chains, almost locked sets or forcing nets. The number next to the level name is the puzzle's difficulty rating: the hardest step it needs, on a scale where singles are 1.0 and the hardest forcing nets are above 9. Every level has exactly one solution.

Can I restart the same puzzle from scratch?

Yes. Open the menu and tap Restart: the same puzzle returns to its starting position with an empty history and the timer at zero. New game gives you a different puzzle instead.

How does Fill notes work?

Fill notes writes every possible candidate into every empty cell with one tap. Tap it again to clear all notes. When you place a digit, that candidate is removed from the notes in the same row, column and box automatically.

What happens when I enter a wrong digit?

With Show mistakes on, a digit that differs from the solution is marked so you can fix it. You can turn the marking off in the menu and check your own work. Nothing is blocked; the puzzle counts as solved once every cell matches the solution.

Can I lock a digit and fill several cells with it?

Yes. Tap a digit while no cell is selected: the digit stays highlighted and every cell you tap receives it. Tap the digit again or press Escape to release it. The lock is released automatically once all nine of that digit are placed.

Is there an iPhone or iPad version?

Not in the App Store yet. The web game runs in Safari on iPhone and iPad; add it to the Home Screen and it opens full screen and works offline.

How do I install the Android APK?

Download baresudoku.apk from GitHub Releases, open the file and allow the installation when Android asks about apps from that source. The app needs Android 8 or newer and asks for no permissions. To update, install the new APK over the old one; the signature is the same.

Is the APK safe to install?

The APK is signed with the developer's key, requests no permissions, has no internet access and contains no libraries, ads or trackers. The complete source code is on GitHub, so you can read it or build the app yourself.

Does my game sync between devices?

No. There is no account and no cloud, so each browser and each device keeps its own saved game. The web game stores one game at a time in the browser; clearing the site data deletes it.

How are the puzzles generated?

Each puzzle is generated on your device when you start a game: the generator builds a complete grid, removes digits while checking that exactly one solution remains, and rates the result with its logical solver until it matches the chosen level. Nothing is downloaded, so there is no fixed list of puzzles.

Is there a timer?

Yes. The elapsed time is shown next to the board and pauses while the menu is open or the tab is hidden. When you solve the puzzle, the level and time are shown. There are no leaderboards or statistics.
